What These Mats Do

Around-view systems stitch live feeds from four cameras (front bumper, rear bumper, left mirror, right mirror) into a single bird's-eye composite image. That stitching relies on precise calibration: the system has to know exactly where each camera is, what angle it's at, and how its field of view overlaps with the others.

Calibration is performed by placing physical target mats on the ground around the vehicle in defined positions. The cameras read the patterns on those mats, and the calibration software calculates the correction data for each camera's position and angle. Get the pattern wrong, get the placement wrong, or use a generic mat — and the stitched image will show distortion, misalignment, or a visible seam between camera views. That's a safety defect, and it will come back to your shop.
